About me

Me_Svalbard.jpgHi, I’m Toby, an editor, writer and travel addict. I like going on adventures, especially to the North, though I also like hot tubs, comfy beds and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Professionally, I’m first and foremost a magazine editor. I edited Time Out magazine in Beijing, Shanghai and Singapore, launching the print and digital editions of Time Out Shanghai. I was also the launch editor of the multi-award-winning N by Norwegian for Norwegian Air Shuttle.

As editorial development director at Ink, the world’s biggest travel media company, I mainly worked on pitches and multimedia launches for some of the world’s biggest airlines, from American Airlines to Etihad, Qatar Airways and Virgin Atlantic, as well as overseeing and mentoring creative teams in the London office.

I almost certainly couldn’t sell ice to the eskimos, but I’m confident I could pitch them a brilliant ice-based print and digital strategy. My magazine about eskimos and ice would feature beautiful bespoke photography, fresh storytelling and nicely crafted sections. It might even have a sense of humour.

As a writer, I’m a generalist, but I like stories that involve adventure, discovery, and always people – preferably characters with a deep passion or a real tale to tell. In a world with lots of talking, I still believe in listening (and taking notes). I’ve written people and places features for the Financial Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Lonely Planet Traveller, BBC Travel and more, plus a hefty portion of the world’s inflight magazines. I also run the People We Met On The Way blog, a series of stories about interesting characters I’ve met on my travels.

I also enjoy multimedia projects, and am lucky enough to regularly work with some of the best photographers and videographers around.

I’m always on the lookout for interesting projects, whether editorial consulting, writing or coming up with bespoke content solutions. So get in touch…
